Welcome to the seaside!
Melchester has always been a town that does things slightly its own way.
It started, as these places do, with Georgian doctors telling pale Londoners that seawater would cure them. The Regency crescents went up. The pier followed. Then the railway, the day-trippers, the deckchairs, the slow decline, the long quiet decades — and then, sometime in the last twenty years, something shifted.
The old fishing arches under the Esplanade filled up with roasters, potters and record dealers. The chip shops stayed (thankfully), but the street behind them turned into a run of kitchens serving Basque small plates and Sri Lankan hoppers. Artists priced out of the capital came for the light and never left.
What you get now is a town of overlapping layers: faded grandeur, working harbour, art school energy, and eight miles of shingle. It shouldn't work as well as it does.
Nobody comes to Melchester and stays out of the water.

There are more places to eat in Melchester per head than anywhere else on this stretch of coast, and locals will happily argue about the rankings for the length of a long lunch.
On the harbour — whatever came off the boats that morning, cooked plainly and priced accordingly. Crab, plaice, dressed brown shrimp on good bread.
Fisherton Road — the town's unofficial restaurant row. Wine bars with twelve seats. A Georgian pub that took its food seriously and never looked back. Late-night noodles for the people leaving the venues at eleven.
Under the arches — bakeries, an oyster hatch, a gelateria run by a family on their third generation.
The classics — a paper cone of chips eaten on the groyne at sunset, with the vinegar going everywhere. Non-negotiable.
Stay the Night. Then Another.
- Seafront hotels — Regency townhouses with high ceilings, sash windows and the sound of the sea all night.
- Boutique boltholes — a dozen rooms, a good bar downstairs, robes you'll consider stealing.
- Fisherton guesthouses — a five-minute walk back from the water, and considerably kinder on the wallet.
Melchester fills up. July and August book out months ahead, and Pride weekend books out the previous year. September is the town's best-kept secret — the sea is at its warmest, the crowds have gone home, and everything is still open.

Down on the Front
Two piers, one of them a ruin. A fifty-metre lido that never closed, however cold it got. Eight miles of shingle, a brass band on Sundays, and a chalk cliff at the eastern end with the whole town laid out behind it.
The seafront is where Melchester shows its whole hand at once — Victorian ambition, faded and rebuilt and faded again, with the arcade still going and the water still cold.
Bring something to swim in. You'll want it sooner than you think.

Where to find us..
Melchester sits about halfway along the south coast, tucked into the bay beneath the Head. You'll find us just over an hour from London by train, with the sea at the bottom of every street. Come by rail if you can — the walk down from the station is the best possible introduction to the town.
A beach is the only place where doing nothing counts as an achievement.
